US DOE initiates new solicitation

On February 29, the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) published a draft application for funds under its »Energy Efficiency Science Initiative.«

The application is for R&D support in fields ranging from energy efficiency technologies to clean energy and focuses on six areas. PV and thermophotovoltaics (TPV) are mentioned under the »advanced materials« topic, with TPV also under the »combustion-related research« topic and batteries under »energy storage and power conversion systems«. Although not directly addressing PV, the topic »sensors and controls« will offer also opportunities for PV BOS (balance of system) research.

Applicants should be university-led teams and include other participants located in the US, be it for- or non-profit organizations, national labs or individual researchers. A minimum cost share of 20 percent is required, and only fundamental research can receive up to full financial support. The estimated total funding is $10.7 million USD.

The final solicitation is expected to be issued by late March, with applications due on May 1, 2000.
