The State of New York makes $1.3 million available for high-value applications

New York State’s Energy Smart program is putting up $1.3 million USD for projects demonstrating high-value off-grid and grid-supported photovoltaic and wind applications that can demonstrate advantages of solar over traditional energy sources.

The program, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), will provide up to $500,000 per accepted proposal with no more than 50 percent of the project costs supported by the state grants. Examples of applications include cell towers, repeating stations, and emergency power supply.

According to NYSERDA’s John Martin, technical information coordinator, the proposals need to show that the applications can become the basis for new industries in New York State. »We’re not here to just help you put in your little project,« says Martin. »We are going to evaluate this on its potential to impact the State of New York and its ratepayers.« Martin expects NYSERDA will receive about 15 proposals of which up to four will probably be selected.

NYSERDA is offering an optional pre-proposal submission for concept review. Deadline is May 24. Final proposals are due by June 28.
