Maryland governor sets renewables target for state-owned facilities

Gov. Parris Glendening of Maryland has issued an executive order calling for at least 6 percent of electricity consumption in state-owned facilities to be produced by renewables.

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) will set guidelines on how the target is to be reached. Although no dates have been announced, Chris Cook, an independent consultant for Maryland-based E3 Energy Services LLC, expects the MEA will make its recommendations within the next three months. Cook says the MEA has a history of voting for PV technology. And the fact that BP Solar is headquartered in the East Coast state could also have a positive effect on the outcome of the recommendations, most likely in terms of a defined PV share. Last year the state legislature passed a 15 percent residential tax credit on PV installations up to $2,000 USD.
