ENEL GreenPower and Pirelli planning module factory in Sicily

The Italian company ENEL GreenPower SpA, one of the world's largest producers of electricity from renewable sources, is partnering with Pirelli SpA for a module assembly factory in Catania, a city on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily.

Production plans: Modules, like those in this system on the wall of ENEL Ricerca, a renewable energy R&D unit in Cologno Monzese, Italy, could soon be carrying the ENEL brand.

An agreement has been reached between ENEL and the tire manufacturer, says Roberto Vigotti, ENEL's business development manager, but he would not reveal the factory's planned capacity. "We can only confirm the willingness to build a manufacturing line," says Vigotti. "We are in the process of choosing the [cell] technology we are going to use." He says ENEL has spoken with several European cell producers. An ENEL representative has also flown to the US for talks with BP Solar, AstroPower Inc., and Evergreen Solar Inc. Vigotti adds that ENEL and Pirelli will make an official announcement before the summer.
