World's largest PV system in Bavaria

Two big centralized PV projects were scheduled to go online in Germany in December. Both are based in the southern state of Bavaria and being installed by the Hamburg-based integrator franchise chain SunTechnics GmbH.

All along the watchtower: A former munitions depot will host the world's largest PV system.

With their project partner, Voltwerk AG of Stuttgart, which like SunTechnics belongs to the Conergy group, these specialists in centralized on-grid PV systems have broken a new record. The solar park, built on the grounds of a former munitions depot, is designed for 4 MW of installed power – making it the largest system in the world. With its 32,740 BP Solar modules and 40 inverters from Siemens AG, the system easily overtakes the current record holder: a 3.3 MW power plant in Serre, Italy. Voltwerk will finance the system in Hemau, which costs about €18.4 million ($18.3 million), through an investment fund. It expects an interest rate of up to 7.64 percent after taxes. Electricity will be fed into the grid and reimbursed at €0.48 ($0.48) per kilowatt-hour over 20 years, as guaranteed in the Renewable Energy Law (EEG).

The other new SunTechnics PV installation, in Untergriesbach near Passau, is planned for a size of »only« 1.7 MW. The €7.5 million ($7.45 million) project, using 11,178 SolarWorld modules and 17 Siemens inverters, was ordered by WindWelt AG, a wind and PV project developer that is part of the SolarWorld AG group. At €4,400 ($4,370) per kilowatt, the smaller system is even cheaper than the Hemau installation at €4,600 ($4,570).
