UNEP launches solar and wind
mapping project
A project to map the solar and wind resources in 13 developing
nations was launched at the end of December by the Nairobi-based United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP).

Construction of a 1 MW module factory in Namibia began in early
March, the result of a joint venture between the Norwegian module assembler
SolEnergy and the Namibia-based investment firm Icon Investments.

A United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) program in Africa to
provide seed money to small private-sector energy companies based on renewable
energy technologies will soon start funding several projects.

In an effort to expand its business activities in the countries of
southern Africa, the Spanish cell and module manufacturer Isofoton has launched
a subsidiary in Johannesburg, South Africa.

calls for universal energy access
More than 100 participants from 21 countries who attended a
two-day conference to examine rural electrification in Africa have signed a
declaration announcing their determination to »work diligently towards
universal access to energy service in Africa by 2020.«
First of 1,000 South African
schools receives PV system
As part of a project financed by the European Union’s DG XVII
designed to supply 1,000 South African schools with PV systems, the first
system has been successfully installed (see PI 2-2000, page 6).
Egyptians seek DOE training
support for PV solar village
The Egyptian government has entered into an agreement with the US
Department of Energy (DOE) which could eventually lead to the creation of a
grid-connected solar village in Egypt.
GEF postpones workshop in Morocco to
September
A workshop of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to review
its photovoltaic programs in Marrakech, Morocco, originally planned for April
(see PI 2/2000, page 6), has been postponed until September 26.
