Experts with a sense of tradition
Since May 1982, the Laboratory of Energy, Ecology and Economy (LEEE) has investigated how energy, ecology, and economics can be most effectively integrated. Its annual outdoor solar module measurements have made LEEE an institution of international importance to the PV industry. However, as they often produce different test results than module manufacturers, and since they publish these conflicting figures, LEEE employees are not always met with the greatest enthusiasm.

Germany's largest PV plant – again

The title of »Largest PV power plant in Germany« is increasingly developing into a challenge cup that is awarded to someone else every few weeks. Soon there will be a winner that was seemingly predestined by its very name.

Module factory on Cyprus drops Photowatt for Spire
A planned module factory on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus has dropped an outsourcing deal with French wafer, cell, and module manufacturer Photowatt (see PI 7/2001, p. 7) and instead is ordering production equipment for a 10 MW line from US-based Spire Corp.

Ispra's Heinz Ossenbrink about energy rating of PV modules
The IEC is working on the draft for a new standard called IEC 61853 »Performance testing and energy rating of terrestrial photovoltaic modules,« which will define uniform guidelines for the calculation of both nominal power and attainable yields. After the »Module Yield Workshop« in Zurich, PHOTON International's Jochen Siemer spoke with Heinz Ossenbrink, head of the test lab at JRC Ispra about the new standard.

ENEL GreenPower and Pirelli planning module factory in Sicily
The Italian company ENEL GreenPower SpA, one of the world's largest producers of electricity from renewable sources, is partnering with Pirelli SpA for a module assembly factory in Catania, a city on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily.

German newcomer plans to start production at 15 MW module factory
The April 12 dedication ceremony for the new module factory building was the first time S.M.D Solarmanufaktur Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG had entered the public arena. But the company was founded back in Nov. 2001, and construction of the facility in Prenzlau, about 100 km north of Berlin, began last December.

Staffelstein misses the point
Each year, the German PV industry gets together at the monastery in Staffelstein, Bavaria, to present new products and discuss market trends. Despite impending elections in September that may be crucial for PV's further growth in this country, Staffelstein neglected that topic and instead discussed export opportunities.

French feed-in tariff approved

Although a long awaited French feed-in tariff finally has been approved, the impact will probably be minimal

New partner, same goals
On March 25, RWE and Schott Glas said they intend to merge their solar subsidiaries into a single company. One simple reason for RWE's move is the benefits of Schott's worldwide distribution network.
