Blair speech lacks
PV specifics, but offers £100 million for renewables
Although UK Prime Minister Tony Blair failed to
mention a hoped-for 70,000 solar roofs program during a major
environmental policy speech on March 6, he did promise £100 million
GPB ($144.5 million USD) to support renewable energy technologies for
two years, starting in April 2002.
Austrian trade
fair center may get 2 MW system
A 2 MW solar system is being considered
for installation on the Trade Fair Center in Wels, Austria, site of
the annual World Sustainable Energy Conference and Global Energy
Awards.
New guidelines
for 100,000 Roofs Program issued
The revised guidelines for Germany's
100,000 Roofs Program were issued in the Bundesanzeiger, the federal
register, on March 17 – about a month later than originally planned
(see PI 3/2001, p. 14), since the Bundesrechnungshof, the federal
court of auditors, had declared certain misgivings about the changes
to the Ministry of Economics.
SolarWorld buys
majority share in Bayer Solar
The German company SolarWorld AG has bought a
majority share in Bayer Solar GmbH, Europe’s largest manufacturer of
silicon solar wafers, the basic material for nearly 90 percent of the
world’s current solar cell production.

Solon AG takes over
ASP AG
At the end of March, the German module manufacturer
and system integrator Solon AG of Berlin bought 100 percent of the
shares of the Swiss inverter manufacturer ASP AG of Laupen, Zurich.

The Dutch energy supplier Nuon intends
to install a PV system covering a 28,000 square meter roof of the
exhibition center of the flower trade fair »Floriane« in Haarlem,
the Netherlands.
ErSol opens second
production line
On April 28 Jürgen Hartwig, CEO of the
solar cell production company ErSol of Erfurt, Germany, gave himself
the biggest present at his 60th birthday party by opening the
company’s second production line.
