BP recall widens its scope
February, 2007: In mid-December BP Solar started an extensive recall for some of its modules identified as having a possible malfunction with insulation (see PI 1/2007, p. 12).
According to information from the company, »80 percent of the products affected were sold in Germany,« and the rest were chiefly to be found in Spain, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. After starting in Germany, BP has also begun the process of recalling modules in these countries. The recall, however, is not as extensive as in Germany, as the number of modules to be recalled is much »smaller and the distribution chain in these markets is much more clearly structured.« In Spain, the company says it was able to contact those in charge of the affected installations directly via distribution partners. Also in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the UK, BP says it has informed installers of the problem directly. Just in case, in two of these countries a special website and hotline was put in place for customers: in the UK, information is available at www.solarrecall.co.uk or by calling +44/20/74965151; in Holland, at www.solar-recall.nl or 0800/0201009. BP is confident of being able to contact all operators of affected systems with the help of its distributors and project partners.
