Call for nominations for Karl Böer solar medal

Nominations for the 2003 Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit are due at the University of Delaware by Sept. 2.

The medal is awarded every two years to an individual who has made »significant pioneering contributions to the promotion of solar energy«; it includes a $40,000 cash prize. Although the panel of judges is heavily weighted towards US agencies and organizations, nominees whose contributions »are recognized nationally and internationally« will be accepted. Past winners include Adolf Goetzberger in 1997 for founding the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany; Stanford R. Ovshinsky of Energy Conversion Devices in 1999 for pioneering work on amorphous semiconductors; and Allen M. Barnett, CEO of AstroPower, in 2001. No decision has yet been made on a time and place for the award ceremony.
