New PV boat from Kopf Solardesign

Following the development of the large PV catamaran RA series, featuring a wooden deck on a stainless steel hull, the German company Kopf Solardesign GmbH & Co. KG has now introduced a small solar boat constructed of fiberglass-reinforced plastic.

Nearly four meters long and 1.8 meters wide, the SOL 10 is recognizable by its elegant solar panel, which curves gracefully from bow to stern over the heads of up to five passengers.

The artistic look comes at a cost to the power: the solar module only delivers 152 watts when operating at 12 volts. Two batteries with a charge capacity of 360 ampere hours have to be used to provide extra muscle to get the 500-watt electric motor, included with the basic model, up to its top speed of seven km/h. At full throttle the SOL 10 can keep going for eight hours. When using solar energy alone, the boat can do three km/h. In addition, 800 W and 1600 W engines are available. Depending on the equipment chosen for the SOL 10, the price ranges from 15,500 DM to 21,500 DM ($7,740 to $10,740 USD).
