Roof-integrated solar tile
BIPV is gaining growing
interest in Germany. As a reaction to the requests of homeowners for
solar roofing tiles, the system integrator Sesol Gesellschaft für
solare Energiesysteme has developed a new solar roofing tile named
»Solardachstein Sesol.«
This roof tile replaces the common roof tile
type, the »Frankfurter Pfanne.« The Frankfurter Pfanne is widespread
and popular in Germany, which gave the new solar tile a good market
chance. As opposed to the Frankfurter Pfanne, the Sesol element doesn’t
contain any bricks; it is a dark-colored solar module within a frame
of special concrete and is therefore not red but grayish. The border
of the solar tile fits perfectly into the fold of the Frankfurter
Pfanne. Thus a roof with integrated Sesol solar tiles is as leak-proof
as a roof without.
The solar module is produced by
the company GSS of Gera, which was also part of the development of the
solar tile. It has a power of 42 watts. The solar tile has also an
MC-plug as a connection to make it easier for a roofer not familiar
with solar energy to install the system. For the IEC 61215 certified
module Sesol is giving a 20-year guarantee on the power output.
The system still is in an early
prototype stage as not more than 8 kW of the new roof tiles have been
installed until now. This may also be a result of the, relative to
common solar modules, slightly high price of 649.50 DM ($320 USD) for
a 42 watt roof tile. In the future Sesol plans to offer solar roof
tiles for other common roof tile types in addition to the Frankfurter
Pfanne.
