Y-elements for Multi-Contact's new connector systems

At this year's PV conference in Bad Staffelstein, Germany, Multi-Contact AG from Switzerland presented a new branch element for its connector system with a security fasten, originally released in 2002 (see PI 7/2002, p. 32).

More flexibility: For its new connector system, Multi-Contact now offers y-elements to enable the parallel connection of solar modules.

The male y-connector consists of two male couplers and a jack. The female y-connector has two jacks and a male coupler. The updated Multi-Contact system makes it possible to parallel connect solar modules even outside the junction box. Similar devices are available for older Multi-Contact connectors, as well as for products from the company's competitor, Tyco Electronics.

Like the common male and female couplers in the series, the branching elements adhere to protection type IP 2X standards while unconnected, which means they're contact-secure from anything with a diameter above 12 mm. When connected, they meet protection type IP 67 standards, which means the device is protected from dust, as well as water in the event of submersion. The device can stand a maximum system voltage of 1,000 V.

The elements have been available since January. The PV-AZS4 male branching element costs €3.29 ($4.03) per unit before taxes; the price for the PV-AZB4 female branching element is €3.25 ($3.98). Multi-Contact offers a discount of 3 percent with a purchase of 100 units, 10 percent for 1,000 units, and 12 percent for 2,500 units.
